What is required of Discalced Carmelite Seculars?

We are guided by the principles of the Rule of Saint Albert, written for the hermits on Mount Carmel in the 13th century, guide Carmelite Secular life today:

  • Living in allegiance to Jesus Christ
  • Being diligent in meditating on the law of the Lord
  • Giving time to spiritual reading
  • Participating in the liturgy of the Church, both the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (Daily when possible) and the Liturgy of the Hours (Both Morning and Evening Prayer each day)
  • Arming ourselves with the practice of the virtues
  • Seeking interior silence and solitude- (30 minutes of Meditation each day)
  • Using prudent discretion in all that you do.
  • Practicing Poverty, Chastity and Obedience according to your state in life.
  • In addition to the days of fasting and abstinence proper to the Church, fasting on the Vigils of St. Joseph, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, The Prophet Elijah, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Teresa of Jesus, St. John of the Cross, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary
  • Wearing the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
  • Cultivate a filial devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary
